Privacy policy

This policy is a draft for the beta. The final version will be published before launch.

Last updated: [date to set at launch]

Draft: needs legal review before launch. The structure and plain-language summaries are ours. Everything in a yellow box or [brackets] is for counsel to write, check or confirm. Apple requires this page to exist at a working URL, to match the App Store privacy label, and to name the third-party AI providers.

At a glance

  • You choose what to share. Pawly uses what you tell it and what you add (photos, videos, logs, chats) to give help that fits your dog.
  • You can see and correct it. What Pawly has learned is marked "you told us", "we saw" or "we guessed", and you can change any of it in Den.
  • AI features ask first. Before anything goes to our AI providers, OpenAI and Microsoft Azure, Pawly asks your permission. You can turn AI off.
  • You can delete everything. Delete your account in the app, and your dog's data goes with it.
  • We don't sell your data. [Confirm with Jake and counsel]

Who we are

Project Pawly makes the Pawly app for iPhone and this website. In this policy, "we" means Project Pawly, and "Pawly" means the app.

[Counsel: legal entity name, state of incorporation and mailing address. Company records list Pawly Technologies, Inc., a Delaware company. Confirm how the entity and the "Project Pawly" brand are named here and in App Store Connect.]

What Pawly collects

  • Account details: your email address, and your name if you sign in with Apple and choose to share it.
  • About your dog: profile details such as age, breed and weight, logs (meals, water, walks, potty), notes, and any vet records you add.
  • Photos and videos you take or upload in Pawly, such as moments, photo checks and practice reps.
  • Voice messages, if you talk to Ask Pawly instead of typing.
  • Your chats with Ask Pawly.
  • Location, only if you allow it, for walks and nearby places.
  • Health data from Apple Health, only if you connect it.
  • What Pawly learns: facts worked out from what you share, each labelled "you told us", "we saw" or "we guessed".
  • Usage and diagnostics: how the app is used, and crash and performance data.
  • Purchases: subscription status, if you subscribe.

[Counsel and Jake: confirm every category against the shipping build and the App Store privacy label. Confirm whether Apple Health ships at launch and whether subscriptions exist. Confirm whether search text inside the app is stored.]

How we use it

  • To run Pawly and keep your dog's record in one place.
  • To make its guidance fit your dog, your home and your routine, and to get more specific over time.
  • For safety: to say what to do now and when to call your vet.
  • To fix problems and improve Pawly.
  • To contact you about your account, the beta and support.

[Counsel: legal bases where required; whether de-identified or aggregated data is used to improve models; any affiliate or product recommendations and how they're disclosed; confirm no cross-app ad tracking (the privacy label currently assumes "Tracking: No").]

AI processing

Many Pawly features use AI, including Ask Pawly, voice messages, photo and video checks, and reading a food label. When you use one, the content that feature needs (your message, photo, video or voice note, and the relevant facts about your dog) is sent to our AI providers to produce an answer.

Our AI providers

  • OpenAI, for chat, reading photos and video, and transcription.
  • Microsoft Azure, including Azure Speech for voice messages.

Your permission

Before the first time any of your data goes to these providers, Pawly shows a screen that names them and asks for your permission. If you say no, the parts of Pawly that don't use AI keep working: logs, potty, walks, vet records and guides. You can turn AI off later in the app, under AI & privacy.

[Counsel and Jake: match the provider list and each provider's role to the shipping build; whether providers may retain or train on this data under our contracts; which features run on Pawly's own models and servers instead; whether a human trainer reviews any behavior videos, and if so, name that here; the exact in-app path for withdrawing consent.]

Photos and video

Photos and videos you add are kept with your account so Pawly can remember them, show you how your puppy has grown, and use them for the checks you ask for. They're sent to AI providers only for features that need them, and only with your permission.

Camera hardware for the home is in development. It's built on one principle: video stays between the camera and your phone.

[Counsel and Jake: retention periods for photos and video; whether EXIF data such as location is read, and what's kept from it; the camera's data handling, written before the camera ships.]

Location

Pawly uses your location only if you allow it, for things like logging walks and finding nearby places. You can log walks by hand instead. We aim to keep the least precise version that still does the job.

[Counsel and Jake: whether background location is used; what's derived from precise location and how long raw coordinates are kept; any consent required by state law.]

Who we share it with

  • Service providers who run parts of Pawly for us, such as hosting, database and AI providers, under contracts that limit what they can do with it.
  • Your vet or others, only when you choose to send them something.
  • When the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.

[Counsel: full list of processors; business transfers; how data would be shared with clinics, boarding or shelters once Pawly for business exists (owner consent model); confirm the "we don't sell your data" statement.]

Keeping and deleting it

We keep your information while your account is open. You can delete your account inside the app at any time: open Den, scroll to You and the app, and tap Delete account. [Exact path to confirm with Jake]

Deleting your account deletes your dog's data with it, including photos, videos, chats and vet records. If you signed in with Apple, we also revoke Pawly's access to your Apple ID.

Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription bought through Apple. Cancel it in your iPhone's Settings first.

[Counsel and Jake: how long deletion takes and what's kept for legal reasons; backups; guest accounts.]

Children

Pawly is made for adults looking after a dog. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

[Counsel: age threshold, App Store age rating, and any state teen-privacy requirements.]

Your choices and rights

  • See and correct what Pawly has learned about you and your dog, in Den.
  • Turn AI off under AI & privacy.
  • Delete your account and data in the app.
  • Ask us for a copy of your data, or about anything in this policy.

[Counsel: state privacy rights (for example California), how requests are verified, honoring Global Privacy Control on the website, and the website's own analytics and cookies (the site plan is cookieless analytics).]

Security

We protect your information with technical and organizational measures, and we keep access to it limited.

[Counsel and Jake: describe safeguards accurately without overclaiming; breach notification.]

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new date. For significant changes, we'll also tell you in the app.
